Daiwa-Hobie BREAM Kayak Series R3 Results & Story- Sydney Harbour

A more perfect morning could not have been asked for the third round of the Daiwa-Hobie Bream Kayak Series and Sydney Harbour did not disappoint.

An even forty anglers set out for the morning chasing their three biggest bream for the weigh master and a telling sign of the good fishing on offer in the harbour was the fact that most of the field had fish for the scales.

It was a tight spread in the end with only 145 grams separating eighth place from second but a standout bag from an outstanding angler took away the honours in the end.

In third place with 3/3 for 1.435kg and taking home $170 was Derek Steele. In second place with 3/3 for 1.445kg and taking away $260 was Daniel Holder. But the day belonged to Andrew Death bringing back three solid fish for 1.815kg.

Andrew used his Hobie Sport Kayak optioned with the mid-range Turbo Mirage Drive system and Hobie livewell setup to fish the boats in Five Dock Bay. Although Andrew had a good prefish closer to the launch area he realised that there were too many other kayakers that had the same good prefish in the area and decided to move further afield because of it. His secret was fishing very slow and methodical and he 'just kept plugging away', hitting every single boat and then starting again and fishing every boat a second time.

He fished 65mm Squidgy Wriggler in black and gold on a 1/28 and 1/40th oz TT HWS jigheads flavoured with a little Yum spray scent on a Silstar Flick Stick rod matched to a Shimano Saros 2500 reel loaded with 3lb Stren and 4lb Vanish leader.

Andrew only caught the three legal fish, the first at 8.15am, the second at 11.30, and his third fish on what he had decided would be his last cast in the bay before starting his journey back.

The Hogs Breath “Boss Hog” for the day went to Gary Cooke with his single fish for the day weighing 840grams and earning him $100. Gary fished an Ecogear ZX blade deep down the side of the pylons of the Ryde bridge.

A big thanks to Sailing Scene at Mona Vale for the great BBQ and drinks that they put on for all the competitors. Event Photos at http://www.hobiefishing.com.au/2010/11/daiwa-hobie-bream-kayak-series-r3-results-sydney-harbour/
